International Conference on Black Sea Security and Climate Change Successfully Concluded in Batumi
On 28 May 2026, the International Conference “Modern Problems of Black Sea Security in the Context of Climate Change” took place in Batumi, Georgia, within the framework of the BSB00091 Harnessing Algae Power for Pollution Reduction and Blue Growth, AlgaeRevive project, co-funded by the Interreg NEXT Black Sea Basin Programme 2021-2027.
The conference was hosted by the Tsotne Mirtskhulava Water Management Institute of the Georgian Technical University and brought together representatives of the project consortium, researchers, academic institutions and environmental experts to address key challenges related to the protection and sustainable development of the Black Sea region.
Via Pontica Foundation, Bulgaria, attended the conference in its capacity as Lead Partner of the AlgaeRevive project, contributing to the exchange among partners and experts on shared environmental priorities for the Black Sea Basin.
The conference programme covered a broad range of topics, including algae, bioremediation, coastal zone management, climate change, recreation, wastewater, pollution, ecology and environmental protection. Through scientific presentations and expert discussions, participants exchanged knowledge on marine monitoring, coastal ecosystem resilience, pollution pressures, wastewater impacts and the role of algae in supporting innovative environmental solutions.
Special attention was given to the importance of cross-border cooperation in addressing climate-related and environmental risks in the Black Sea Basin. The discussions highlighted the need for stronger links between research, monitoring, policy and practice, as well as for joint approaches that can support long-term ecosystem protection and the sustainable use of marine resources.
The event also contributed to the wider objectives of AlgaeRevive, which promotes research, innovation and cooperation on algae-based solutions for pollution reduction and sustainable blue growth. By bringing together expertise from across the region, the conference provided an important platform for strengthening dialogue among partner institutions and the wider scientific community.
The conference reaffirmed the importance of regional cooperation, shared scientific knowledge and coordinated action in building a cleaner, more resilient and more sustainable Black Sea Basin.
