Project Objectives

AlgaeRevive aims to develop practical, science-based tools and solutions to support the ecological restoration of the Black Sea by harnessing the natural potential of algae. The project brings together research institutions, public bodies, and civil society organizations across the region with the shared ambition to turn algae into a strategic resource for improving water quality, mitigating pollution pressures, and stimulating sustainable local economies.

The project focuses on building a robust foundation for monitoring, assessment, and the application of innovative nature-based practices. Through a combination of satellite observations, field measurements, laboratory analyses, and advanced data processing, AlgaeRevive seeks to generate integrated knowledge that can guide decision-making, strengthen cross-border cooperation, and accelerate the transition towards healthier and more resilient marine ecosystems.

A key output of the project is the AlgaeSense Tool – a digital platform designed to collect, analyse, and visualise information related to algal presence, dynamics, and associated environmental parameters in the Black Sea. The platform will support early detection of critical biomass concentrations, evaluation of bioremediation potential, and identification of opportunities for nature-based interventions. Complementing it is the Algae Knowledge Hub, an online resource offering scientific materials, operational guidelines, datasets, and training content for institutions, practitioners, entrepreneurs, and local communities.

AlgaeRevive also pursues strong practical orientation through local pilot activities. These pilots investigate the feasibility of using algae for biofiltration, uptake of excess nutrients, production of value-added biomass, and reduction of environmental pressures in coastal zones. The findings will contribute to future marine resource management policies and climate adaptation strategies in the Black Sea Basin.

At its core, AlgaeRevive represents a commitment to restoring the balance between human activity and natural processes in the Black Sea. Through science, technology, and shared knowledge, the project works towards a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable sea that supports the long-term well-being of the entire region.
